Crowns

Crowns are restorations made by generally metal and/or porcelain. They are put over the tooth when the tooth needs extra strength and a filling is not sufficient.

The tooth is normally trimmed down and impressions are taken. The impression is sent to a laboratory who will hand make and craft the artificial crown. The crown will then be sent back to cement onto the tooth.

The crown will require the patient to look after it more so than their natural tooth. The life of a crown depends on how well it is looked after by the patient.

Unfortunately some teeth will need to have root canal after a crown is placed. For this reason we tend to only perform a crown as treatment if really needed.

A dental crown could be used for a number of other reasons, for instance:

• You may like to improve the appearance of the tooth
• You may have had a root filling which will need a crown to protect it
